RP’s 1st ever Methane Power Plant utilize in Montalban Rizal

WASTE TO CLEAN ELECTRICITY-Montalban Methane Power Corporation is now serving the 15,000 household through Meralco as of August 2008. President 

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inaugurated and lead the ceremonial switch-on of the first ever Landfill Gas-to-Energy Project on July 24, 2008, the said project has the capacity to generate electricity to power homes and industries.
President with the companied of Gov. Jun Ynares III, DENR Sec. Lito Atienza, and Mayor Pedro Cuerpo also inspected the facilities of the Montalban Landfill Methane Recovery and Electricity Generation Plant in Barangay San Isidro, Montalban, Rizal after the inauguration and switch on. 
The Methane power plant which will captured the landfill gas (LFG) particularly methane from the 14 hectare Montalban Sanitary Landfill is sold to Meralco and expected to benefit the townsfolk of Montalban’s Mayor Pedro “Ping” Cuerpo. 
The power plant is expected to generate 15 MW of electricity over the period of 10 years.
This US$ 33 million dollars (P1.65 billion) project is a Build-Own-Operate Project of the Montalban Methane Power Corporation (MMPC) a predominantly Filipino-owned company of 60% and in partnership with the Carbon Assets Funds (CAF) British (40%).
MMPC is also expected to benefit the environment (ozone layer) as the Flaring component of the Project breaks down methane gas, which is a green house gas (GHG) 21 times stronger than carbon dioxide.
This methane gas facility of Montalban Methane Power Corporation (MMPC) follows the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on the Climate Change (UNFCCC) initiative and provides carbon credits for developed countries under category of project that reduce emissions in developing economies under the Clean Development Mechanism. The power plant project in Montalban is a candidate for a Gold Standard (GS) and 4th largest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in the world.
Mayor Ping Cuerpo said that the methane power revenue returns in Montalban Municipality is 22%, Governor’s owner of Property 8% and 70% to the SWIMS.
